Interim police chief named

Assistant Police Chief Travis Gray has a new title, one that may only be temporary.

Gray was named the interim chief of the Kingfisher Police Department earlier this month.

That move came after Chief David Catron quietly retired with his last day on the force being May 10.

Gray will serve the interim role during a probationary period during which he’ll be evaluated by City Manager Jim Thomas for the full-time position.

Gray was at last Monday’s meeting of the Kingfisher City Commission.

He told commissioners he would do his best to continue the work done by Catron over the past several years and he commented that it was “business as usual” at the department.

Thomas commented that he was encouraged by the work ethic and knowledge of Gray and he expected him to continue with the excellent record he had shown as assistant chief in the new position.

Gray has been with Kingfisher Police Department for 17 years.

Prior to that, he served seven years in Cashion.

Catron was in his fifth year as chief and nearly 30 years with KPD.

His law enforcement career began in 1992 with the Cashion Police Department.

He joined KPD in 1997. Thomas had kind words for Catron as well.

“Dave’s not a guy that likes a lot of attention. He wouldn’t even let us have a cake and party for him,” Thomas said.

“He did a terrific job for the city and his efforts are certainly appreciated.”
