Joneses’ granddaughter is Miss SWOSU’s Outstanding Teen

Landri Jones, a sophomore at Weatherford High School, was recently crowned the 2023 Miss SWOSU’s Outstanding Teen.

Jones is the daughter of Jarred and Corrie Jones as well as the granddaughter of Robbye and Jan Jones of Kingfisher.

Six candidates from across the state, ranging in age from 13 to 18 years old, competed for the title, scholarships and prizes on Sat. Jan. 14, at Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Fine Arts Center in Weatherford.

Along with the crown and title, Jones received a $500 scholarship to SWOSU and a $500 cash prize.

In addition, she also received a $50 gift card for the Teen Talent Award, $50 chamber certificate for the Teen Spirit Award, a $25 gift card for selling the most tickets and a $25 chamber certificate for the Teen Crowd Pleaser Award as well as other prizes.

As this year’s winner, Jones will represent the university as the competition’s 14th titleholder since its inception in 2009.

“The young women who participate in these competitions learn self-discipline, sharpen their talents and gain opportunities for scholarships,” SWOSU President Dr. Diana Lovell said.

“The winners have the opportunity to represent our university with intelligence and dignity.”

Contestants are judged based on their performance in four categories - talent, evening wear/ on-state question, lifestyle and fitness and a personal interview conducted prior to the on-stage competition.

In winning the talent division, Jones performed her rendition and vocal presentation of “Somebody to Love.”

Contestants also presented a social impact statement explaining their chosen initiative which is designed to educate and advocate for a social cause they are passionate about.

Active in FFA and livestock shows, Jones’ social impact statement supports Show Stoppers, an organization which provides an opportunity for students with special needs to interact with and exhibit livestock.

Jones is also a cheerleader at WHS, officer of the Weatherford FFA chapter and shares her vocal talent at various events in the community.

The 65th Miss SWOSU competition was also held in conjunction with the teen competition, with Megan Bradley of Leedey taking home this year’s crown.

Both reigning titleholders are eligible to compete in their respective categories at the Miss Oklahoma and Miss Oklahoma’s Outstanding Teen competition this summer.

Jones’ desire to be a positive influence for young girls led her to the decision to enter the competition, she said.

“It’s such an honor,” Jones said. “I’m so grateful to have been chosen as Miss SWOSU’s Outstanding Teen.

“I can’t wait to represent SWOSU and Weatherford at Miss Oklahoma’s Outstanding Teen.”
