KHS STUCO donates pull tabs to RMH
Kingfisher High School turned pull tabs into dollars for the underserved this year.
Student Council had collection jars at each of the district’s schools for most of the school year to collect pull tabs to take to the Ronald McDonald House for recycling.
“We were able to donate a little more than 10 gallons of pull tabs,” said Amy Pearson, STUCO adviser.
When the RMH recycles the donated pull tabs, the monies are used to allow families a place to stay while they have a child at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital.
“The money is also used to purchase food for them to have during their stay,” Pearson explained.
When delivering the tabs last week, the KHS STUCO officers and Pearson were given a tour of the housing facility where they learned just what the RMH does.
“They offer a room, similar to a hotel room, as well as a kitchen stocked with food,” Pearson said. “They are provided a meal each evening for dinner, there is a space for the families to gather for visits, a play room for young siblings, a library, as well as another space for relaxing so they’re not confined to their room when they can’t be at the hospital with their child.”
The RMH is completely cost-free for the families so they don’t have the financial burden and can focus solely on their child.
“They are always appreciative of donations for any of these items,” Pearson said.
KHS STUCO plans to have the same pull tab drive next school year.
“We will begin in August asking for pull tab donations,” Pearson said. “We encourage our community to start saving this summer. We will have donation jars at each of the schools again the first week of school.”
