Kingfisher County Extension on June 1 hosted a babysitting workshop for county youth 11 years old and up.

The six-hour class was held at the Kingfisher County Extension Office.

Lindy Peterman, the FCS educator, and Cailee Dean, family advocate for Big Five Community Services, were the instructors and provider of materials for the class.

The class held several topics for would-be babysitters.

Participants learned about what babysitting is and if they are the right kind of person for the job.

Child development was taught as youth learned about the ages and stages of behavior and play.

They learned about the business of babysitting which includes finances, babysitter reports and the information needed from the parents of the kids for which they will potentially babysit.

They learned about the different types of entertainment they could provide for the kids and how to choose healthy snacks and meals to feed the kids.

Throughout the day, they learned how to make a healthy snack, how to diaper a baby and created posters about child development, ages and stages, and babysitting safety.

In the afternoon, the youth learned about CPR, first aid and natural disaster preparation from local firemen Mitch Tollefson and Landon Timmons.

There were 13 participants at the workshop.

“Each participant had a lot of fun learning about the business of babysitting and how to be an efficient babysitter,” Peterman said.

This workshop was the first 4-H workshop offered for the summer.
