Kingfisher County maintains status as state’s second most generous
Kingfisher County has maintained its 2020 status as the second most generous county in the state and close to the top 10% most giving nationwide.
That’s according to a study by SmartAsset.com, which measured how much people donate as a percentage of their net income and the proportion of people in each county who make charitable donations.
According to the study, Kingfisher County ranked highest in Oklahoma in the proportion of its population who made charitable donations over the last year.
The county ranked sixth in how much was donated as a percentage of net income.
Tulsa was the most generous county for two years running, according to the study.
Rounding out this year’s top 10, followed by their 2020 ranking in parentheses, include:
3. Oklahoma County (4)
4. Alfalfa County (10)
5. Major County
6. Rogers County (5)
7. Washington County (6)
8. Logan County (7)
9. Canadian County (8)
10. Wagoner County
Wagoner County was not listed in last year’s top 10, while Payne County dropped out of the top 10, where it was listed as last year’s number 9.
New Tax Rules
Charitable deductions don’t carry as big a punch come tax filing time since increases in the standard deduction mean nine out of 10 taxpayers no longer itemize.
However, rules implemented under the CARES Act allowed taxpayers who don’t itemize to take a limited deduction for charitable contributions on top of the standard deduction.
Last year, that amount was limited to $300 per tax return, but for 2021 the amount will be $300 per individual or $600 for married couples filing jointly.
As the end of the year closes in, any number of local nonprofit organizations could benefit from donations from county residents who haven’t met that $300 or $600 maximum.
