KPD investigating reported abduction attempt

Chief says no other confirmed incidents; cites confusing FB posts

Kingfisher Police Department is still investigating a kidnapping attempt reported by a local 14-year-old girl, but so far has been unable to locate other witnesses or the vehicle and suspects described, Police Chief David Catron said.

The girl’s family called police about 7 p.m. last Monday to report the girl’s near abduction by two men in a white van near Shaw Park about a half hour earlier.

The girl told Sgt. Charles Trout that she was walking east on Fay Avenue when a westbound white van stopped and a man got out and grabbed her by the arms.

According to Trout’s report, the girl said she was able to turn around and punch the guy in the nose and then yelled and kicked at the man.

She told police that a woman heard the commotion from nearby Shaw Park and ran over and yelled at the suspect, who then got back into the van and fled.

The girl told police she didn’t know the woman, who she said sat with her at the park to comfort her after the incident and then had some of her firends drive around in the area to make sure the van had left, according to the report.

The girl described the driver and passenger of the van as tall black men in their 20s who spoke to each other in a foreign language, which might have been Spanish, according to the report.

Catron said Friday that despite canvassing the neighborhood and issuing a social media plea, his department has been unable to identify or locate the woman the girl said came to her aid. A search for the van she

A search for the van she described also has been unsuccessful, he said. Police also viewed secu

Police also viewed security video footage obtained from two nearby residences, including cameras trained on the park itself and on the intersection the van would have passed through. Watching footage covering the timespan of 5-7 p.m., officers observed 12 vehicles pass through the intersection, none of which was a white van. Footage of the park showed other people there during the time period, but not the girl or the van, Catron said.

Despite social media reports that have caused some confusion, Catron said he is not aware of any confirmed reports of similar incidents in surrounding areas.

The Piedmont Police Department posted information about an alleged abduction attempt there that was reported June 8 and included an image captured from a video camera of a white van “that might be involved.” The Kingfisher girl told Trout that the van in the photo was not the van she saw. The description of the Enid suspect also did not match.

On Tuesday, Piedmont posted the following update: “We’ve followed several leads and interviewed different individuals, and after following up with the alleged victim, it has been determined that the attempted kidnapping is unfounded. While we should all be vigilant for such incidents, the cause for immediate concern has passed.”

Another Facebook post described what first looked like another attempted abduction “south of Enid,” but that post was actually describing what was reported in Kingfisher, Catron said.

“The person who posted was a work friend of the girl’s dad who was trying to warn people to be on the lookout,” he said. “Technically, we are ‘south of Enid,’ but people understandably assumed that was a separate event with the same van and suspects matching the same description. It was not.”

Catron said his officers will continue the investigation and he encourages anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in or around Shaw Park at the time of the reported incident (between 5 and 7 p.m. June 20) to call the police department.
