KPS auditor pleased with findings
Another positive report was presented to the Kingfisher Board of Education by the school district’s auditor.
“From our standpoint, we feel like it’s a good audit for the school,” said James Kuykendall, president of Britton, Kuykendall & Miller CPAs of Weatherford, the firm that has performed the district’s annual audit for several years.
Kuykendall was addressing the board Monday during its regular February meeting.
He presented board members with the audit report.
“Overall, you see you’re in excellent financial shape,” he said.
Kuykendall noted the district’s general fund balance of nearly $9 million.
“We’ve seen that increase significantly the last couple of years.”
The district saw increases in both local (mostly ad valorem) and federal revenues to the tune of more $4 million combined over the previous year.
Although the district had $2.5 million more in expenditures over the previous years, it still took in about $1 million more than those expenditures, he said.
The report did include four “deficiencies” for the district.
One dealt with a health insurance form not being filed with the IRS and another with 1099s not being issued to each person or entity that was paid at least $600 by the district.
Another area noted that some of the technology purchased with federal funds wasn’t properly labeled, which is required by federal program guidelines.
“We probably have this comment on 90 percent of our audits,” noted Kuykendall.
Another item dealt with some invoices being dated prior to purchase orders being approved, which Kuykendall said is common when dealing with the large number of activity accounts.
The auditor said none of the deficiencies were cause for alarm.
“These are just simple; they’re not really major items and they’d be presented differently if they were major items,” he said. “They’re just procedures that need to be enhanced. We need to make sure we reinforce those areas.”
