KPS, Lomega students offer ‘superior’ singing at Seiling
Kingfisher Upper Elementary’s fifth and sixth grade choir and Kingfisher Junior High’s choirs participated in the Seiling Music Festival.
KUE sang French folk song “J’entend le Moulin” arranged by Ruth Dwyer and Martin Ellis and “Storm” by James DesJardins.
They earned a “superior” rating from all three judges.
Samuel Takape played the djembe on “Storm.”
The KJH women’s choir was a new addition to Kingfi sher’s competition.
The choir sang the spiritual “I’ve Been In the Storm So Long” arranged by Christi Jones and “Whatever Is True” by Michael John Trotta.
The choir earned “superior” from all three judges.
KJH mixed choir sang South African song “Freedom Is Coming” by Henry Leck, Haitian folk song “Fey O!” arranged by Ruth Morris Gray and “Bringers of Noise” by Kyle Pederson.
This choir also earned “superior” from all three judges.
“‘Bringers of Noise’ was the risky piece as it had narration, nonsense words, stomping and drumming,” said Kingfisher choral director Diann Magnus. “The judges were impressed with this out-of-the-ordinary piece.”
KJH will perform the piece at the spring concert at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, at Heritage Auditorium.
Several students performed solos and ensembles and all earned “superior” ratings from the judges.
KUE had two large ensembles, KJH mixed choir had two large ensembles and KJH women had one large ensemble.
Ensembles have 10 students in each.
Duets were fifth graders Elizabeth Click and Reid Swafford; sixth graders Hannah Johnson and Evelyn Martin; and eighth graders Shilo Willingham and Gisselle Ponce.
Solos were fifth graders Lilly Larsen, Mckenzy Wilson, Elizabeth Click, Scarlet Heckman, Natalie Grunke, Dominic Long, Rylee Johnson; sixth graders Valeria Rodriguez, Sydney Snyder, Brailyn Schroeder, Evelyn Martin, Hannah Johnson; seventh graders Parker Le-Force, Abigail Smith; and eighth graders Haven Branson, Thaddaeus Stephenson and Shilo Willingham.
Ensembles, Duets, Solos all received medals for their “superiors.”
Magnus also had a private voice student from Lomega who took part in the festival.
Lomega fourth grader Corianne Wilczek earned a “superior” for her solo “The Swing” by Mary Lynn Lightfoot.
