KPS robotics team claims prestigious award at regional, competes at state
Kingfisher’s robotics team brought home a major award from a regional competition late last year.
The Lego Jacketz, a team comprised of students at Kingfisher Upper Elementary and Kingfisher Junior High, took part in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge regional event at the Francis Tuttle Technology Center in Oklahoma City.
The team was presented the Champion’s Award after the event.
The award “celebrates a team that embodies the FIRST LEGO League Challenge experience by fully embracing our core values while achieving excellence and innovation in robot performance, robot design and the innovation project.”
The award also earned the team a spot in the state competition, which was held Dec. 12 on the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater.
There, the Jacketz competed against 35 other teams from across the state.
The team received second place for its innovation project, which was initially conceived by eighth grader Savana Reherman.
The project involves using radiated trash as a continuous energy source.
“The judges were impressed at both the regional and state levels with the concept,” said Melody Kuehn, one of the team’s coaches along with Kurt Kaya.
The team created a presentation with engineers, astronauts and the D.O.G.E.S. robot.
Part of the Challenge League is the robot design.
The team designed and coded a robot to attain as many points as possible by completing missions on the robot field map.
“They had to work as a team to complete as many missions as they could in just two-and-a-half minutes,” Kuehn said Team members include eighth graders Audrey Long, Cooper Davis and Re- herman; seventh graders Will Finley, Maddux Gomez and Finley Harrison; and fifth grader Audrey Heckman.
