KPS takes steps to be more energy efficient
Assessment provided by and ‘energy manager’ to be trained through CCOSA program
Kingfisher Public Schools will soon take steps to become more energy efficient.
The board of education on Monday approved the district joining the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration (CCOSA) Energy Efficiency Framework.
“I’m excited to see where this goes,” Superintendent David Glover told board members in proposing the move during the November regular meeting.
The states mission of the efficiency program is “to provide public schools with framework to guide them in the development and implementation of an energy efficiency plan that is educational and sustainable.”
Through the program, the district will appoint an “energy manager,” who will go through training.
There will also be an assessment conducted throughout the district and a plan put in place to help with energy conservation. The energy manager will oversee that plan.
“There are about 50 districts doing this right now,” Glover said. He added the program could save the district in the ballpark of $50,000 to $75,000 annually.
“There may be some changes that teachers aren’t used to and there may be some they don’t like,” Glover said.
The only costs of the program are the one-time training fee and paying the “energy manager” an extra- duty stipend annually as it will be someone who is already on staff.
The move was part of a meeting that lasted 70 minutes.
Board members spent 30 minutes in executive session, after which they voted unanimously to hire Rita Diaz Florez as a Gilmour Elementary custodian and Stavana Conley as a junior high paraprofessional.
The board also approved a resolution calling for an election for board seat No. 3.
The primary election for the five-year term will be Feb. 7, 2023, and the general election, if necessary, on April 4.
The seat is currently held by board President Jim Perdue.
The filing period for the election is Dec. 5-7.
Board members also took the routine move to close polling places with 100 or fewer registered voters in those precincts. For Kingfisher’s district, that’s precincts 105, 106, 204, 302 and 304. Four of them have no registered voters and one has 23.
In other moves Monday, board members:
• Declared as surplus 270 pairs of football pants, 228 football jerseys and 35 Schutt helmets to be disposed of at Glover’s discretion;
• Declared as surplus approximately 300 plastic chairs, 380 desks and 30 tables that were replaced at the high school. They will be auction off on Purple Wave;
• Approved fundraisers for faculty funds at the junior high and high school;
• Approved an item that allows teachers to voluntarily donate sick leave to Morgan Finley through the district’s sick leave sharing policy.
All board members were present at the meeting.
Joining Perdue were Charles Walker, Carly Franks, Terry Payne and Dana Golbek.
