KPS welcoming back pair of familiar faces

Some familiar faces will be joining new ones on the Kingfisher Public School staff this year.

Among the certified personnel hires approved Monday by the Kingfisher Board of Education were Lynn Barnett and Bob Barnett.

Lynn Barnett will teach at alternative education - also known as Jacket Academy - a program she spearheaded for 20 years before retiring in 2020.

Bob Barnett will teach physics part-time at Kingfi sher High School.

It was a building he once ran as he served as KHS principal from 1988 to 1997 before spending 14 years as superintendent, principal and teacher at Okarche.

Barnett retired from education before returning to teach chemistry and physics at Okarche in 2019.

The board filled several other staff positions as the 2024-25 school year nears. Teachers report next week and students begin classes Aug. 15.

Superintendent David Glover was unable to attend the August regular meeting due to an emergency.

Other hires approved were Michelle Jones as Kingfisher Upper Elementary principal as well as districtwide curriculum and professional development director (Ed. note: See related story on Page 1); Logan Desmond as a band teacher; Stacy McDowell for Spanish and driver’s education; Deana Silk for eighth grade reading; and Daphni Jennings, the new cheer coach, who will teach physical science.

(Note: Read more about the new hires in next Wednesday’s annual “Back-to-School Edition.)

Adjunct teachers approved were Bradley Pennock, junior high math; LeslieClickandDanBivins, drama; Connor Brooks, high school math; Dr. A.J. Johnson, art and photography; Silk for eighth grade reading; Melody Wilfong, art; Keaton Callins, U.S. History; and Santi Mejia, English-second language (ESL).

Adjunct teachers can be a certified employee teaching outside their area of certification or a person who doesn’t hold a certification of any kind.

Support staff approved were Olivia Blair and Tamera Snyder as paraprofessionals at the junior high and Mallori Pool as a paraprofessional at KUE.

Those moves were made after a two-hour executive session.

Just over an hour into the executive session, board members called Stuart Purintun, director of special operations and athletics, and John Harris, KHS principal, into the meeting room.

Purintun spent 20 minutes with the board while Harris was in for nearly 45 minutes.

Also after the executive session, the board voted to table any action on extra-duty pay schedules.

“Based on our discussion and the extra-duty being presented with an additional increase this year, I make a motion we table that until our next meeting where we can discuss that with Mr. Glover prior to approving that,” said board member Brad Wittrock.

Members Terry Payne, Dana Golbek, Carly Franks and Charles Walker voted in agreement to table it.

Board members had three resignations in their packets.

One was from Kerri Lafferty, a junior high English teacher and the high school track and cross country coach who took a position at Dover. Another was from David Ellis, a high school science teacher who took at position at Weatherford, from which he’d been commuting every day for the last three years. A third was from elementary aide Bailey Farrow.
