KUE choir members shine in competition
Members of the Kingfi sher Upper Elementary fifth and sixth grade choir have officially experienced a vocal competition.
And they were successful in doing so.
They took part March 31 in the Seiling Music Festival.
“These students have never competed in a contest before, so this was a big experience for this young choir,” said Diann Magnus, the choral director for Kingfisher Public Schools.
The students sang “Howdidow, Deediddleumday,” an English folk song arranged by Vicki Tucker Courtney and “Skylark and Nightingale” by Audrey Snyder.
They earned “Superior” ratings from all three judges.
The rating system is the same as OSSAA choir contests where a 1=Superior, 2= Excellent, 3=Good, 4=Fair and 5=Poor.
KUE also had nine solos and seven ensembles (2-10 singers) perform.
Hannah Johnson, Valeria Rodriguez, Sydney Snyder, Channing Dunn, Abigail Smith, Evelyn Martin and Brailyn Schroeder earned “Superior” and Alexis Fleming and Aubree Burpo earned “Excellent.”
Six of the ensembles earned “Superior” and 1 ensemble earned “Excellent.”
“I am very proud of the work these young musicians did,” Magnus said.
“I had several soloists and those in ensembles who wanted work almost daily on their songs so they would do well.
“I encourage students to compete because it teaches work ethic, self evaluation, how to work under pressure and how to take constructive criticism. Some of these students already had the work ethic in place.”
