It’s official, Hennessey will be getting a Family Dollar Store.

Property owner Scott Hajek said he got a call Tuesday afternoon that his 1.45 acres on State Highway 51 across the street north of Pizza Hut was selected.

The call was from the closing company and not from Family Dollar, he said.

Closing is Oct. 1.

The store will be located on the west side of an extension of Cheyenne Street.

Hajek, a Hennessey land developer and farmer, made the announcement at Tuesday night’s Hennessey Board of Trustee meeting during citizen comments.

He didn’t give the purchase price and said it was up to Family Dollar to give information on the size of the store and its building costs.

Hajek said he and his wife, Karel, who was also at the Tuesday meeting, have visited other Family Dollar stores and were impressed with them and the amount of clothing they offered.

He’d told the board last month that Family Dollar/ Dollar Tree was looking to build on his property.

The company is looking at 1,000 sites and will decide on 300 before investing $2 million in a site, he said at the Aug. 12 meeting.

During that meeting, Town Administrator Tiffany Tillman said the company had already made a variance request.

Hajek told her then that the company was checking out all the properties and that didn’t necessarily mean they’d choose Hennessey.

Besides, he said he hadn’t “signed anything yet.”

He is currently constructing the Hennessey Meat Processing Plant on his property in that area.

For the past two or three years, Hajek has worked to get his 25.75 acres rezoned as highway commercial and a few months ago the town completed its longtime plan to extend a sewer service to the north side of S.H. 51.

Hennessey has had a Dollar General Store for more than 20 years. It’s currently located on U.S. Highway 81 north of S.H. 51.
