Let’s Race

Let’s Race

Have you ever seen more than 500 rubber ducks race in a $2 million facility.

This week is your chance.

The annual Kingfisher Educational Foundation Duck Race is 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at the Vernie Snow Aquatic Center.

The event is the biggest fundraiser for the KEF, which provides supplemental funding and grants to Kingfisher Public Schools teachers.

The grants are awarded just before Christmas each year after an application and screening process that begins in October.

The KEF received $87,000 in requests last year and awarded some $43,000 in grants (GO for Public Schools awarded another $41,000).

The KEF began in 1985 and has received more than $750,000 in contributions.

The money goes into a foundation and the interest earned is what helps fund the grants.

The Duck Race started in 1999.

The cost to “buy” a duck is $50 each.

The ducks will be released into the pool and the owner of the duck that crosses the finish line first will win $1,000.

Second place wins $500 while third place gets $300.

It also pays to finish last. That duck’s owner earns $100.

You do not have to be present to win.

“The reason we do this and the reason I love to serve is it’s giving back locally to our public school system,” said David Blair, KEF president.

Blair is joined on the KEF board by Vice President Jeff Johnson, Secretary Kristi Hyatt, Treasurer Joe Voth, Zac Kannady, Jeff Wilcox, Jennifer Farrar, Sara Garrett, Heath Redwine, Tanya Cameron, Brooke Bollenbach and KPS Superintendent David Glover.

There is still time to purchase a duck right up until race time.

They’ll be available for purchase at the door of Vernie Snow Aquatic Center before the race.

To purchase a duck before race day, visit the KEF’s website at www.kefduckrace. com or by calling 405818-3521, 580-475-2669 or 405-476-1010.
