Loftis relays reports of earthquakes near Okarche

By

Kingfisher City-County Emergency Manager Steve Loftis reported at Monday’s meeting of Kingfisher County commissioners that several Okarche residents had reported a series of earthquakes.

Loftis said lighter quakes began earlier but culminated in a 2.4 to 2.6 Richter scale event Sunday.

He said one Okarche resident had reported the Sunday quake dislodged a support structure in his home.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake centered at a point two miles north-northeast of Okarche at a depth of 1.4 kilometers at 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

District 1 Commissioner Jeff Moss, vice-chairman of the board, presided in the absence of Chairman Heath Dobrovolny, in a 10-minute meeting.

Moss reminded that a series of informational meetings would be held at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m at the Kingfisher County Fairgrounds Thursday by the county’s health insurance provider, Oklahoma Public Employees Health and Wellness, to explain services available.

Moss said the public is welcome at the meetings along with county employees and their spouses.

Actions taken during the meeting included: • Monthly reports from the offices of sheriff, treasurer, county clerk, assessor, court clerk, court clerk preservation, election board and health department;

• The annual report of the sheriff’s office detailing jail occupancy and expenses;

• The yearly reports of the district attorney’s office for forfeiture accounts and controlled dangerous substance revolving fund; • ODOT’s supplemental and modification agreement on maintenance, financing and right-of-way on county road EW 79.5 over Uncle John Creek bridge at the east edge of Kingfisher;

• A right-of-way permit for K&J Construction for three-inch and 12-inch pipelines located two miles north and eight miles east of Dover, District 2, and

• Approval of monthly appropriations for the month of December 2022.

Commissioner Ray Alan Shimanek moved to table an action item reappointing James Wittrock to the county excise and equalization board until next week’s meeting when Dobrovolny can be present.

Deputy County Clerk Emily Lee served as minute clerk and Loftis and Deputy Emergency Management Director Ryan Deatherage also were present.

The weekly COVID report showed Cashion with six cases, up six from last week, and Kingfisher with 14, also up six from last week.
