Lots of cold, almost no precipitation
Kingfisher County received a burst of cold air, a dash of dry snow and sleet, but little else Monday and Tuesday as a winter storm swept across southern and southeastern Oklahoma.
Cold greeted local residents Sunday with a dusting of dry snow that did not provide enough moisture to measure.
Monday morning saw a brief period of sleet, but it quickly disappeared.
Some schools closed Tuesday because of the winter storm, but local schools were not affected.
The cold weather dropped well below freezing, reaching a high of only 24 degrees on Sunday and dropping to a shivery 15 degrees early Monday.
Tuesday was much the same, freezing water in outdoor containers and livestock water supplies, which required animal owners to take extra precautions for their welfare.
Stockmen from one side of the county to the other spent extra hours breaking ice on ponds so that their animals could drink.
The American Veterinary Medicine Association provides these tips for pets during cold weather:
• Keep pets indoors when possible.
• Provide outdoor shelter for your pets.
• Care for your pet’s feet.
• Provide extra food and water.
• Use leashes when walking near water.
• Don’t lock pets in cars.
• Keep antifreeze out of reach from pets.
• Check your vehicle before starting the engine.
