LSF executive director discusses eye bank with Kingfi sher Lions

The executive director of the Okahoma Lions Service Foundation spoke at a recent Kingfisher Lions Club meeting, though she didn’t speak specifically about her office. Marie Burns, left, instead discussed the Oklahoma Lions Eye Bank with the local civic group. Burns was there on behalf of Lori Miller, the executive director of the eye bank who was originally scheduled to speak, but was pulled away by other obligations. Eye banks medically evaluate and distribute eyes donated by individuals for use in corneal transplantation, research and education. U.S. eye banks provide tissue for an average of over 70,000 corneal transplants a year. The Oklahoma Lions Eye Bank, established in 1957, is the only one in the state. Since it opened, the eye bank has helped faciliate the transplant of more than 23,000 corneas, Burns said. “It’s really cool to experience someone who can’t see be able to see after a transplant,” she said. The eye bank accepts donors between the ages of 2 and 70, she added. Burns is pictured with Kingfisher Lions Club President Cindy Harris. [KT&FP Staff Photo]
