Meals on Wheels seeks donations to continue serving area’s elderly

Kingfisher Meals on Wheels is seeking local donations to help finance its mission to feed hot, nutritious meals to the area’s elderly and homebound residents.

Now in its 46th year, the program serves meals to, on average, 35 senior citizens or homebound residents.

The meals are delivered by local volunteers, churches and other organizations.

There are three routes in Kingfisher that run Monday through Friday and one route in Okarche that runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Patrons pay $4 per meal and dessert is 50 cents.

It currently costs Meals on Wheels approximately $8.50 per meal after all expenses are paid.

Meals on Wheels employs two cooks who prepare the meals each day as well as a local accountant to handle the books.

Meals on Wheels relies exclusively on private donations to fund its operations and to keep the price of the meals affordable for the patrons.

Meals on Wheels receives no government assistance.

“We’re very grateful to all the volunteers who deliver the meals and to the people who have donated to our cause in the past year,” said Sheila Thomas, president of the Meals on Wheels board of directors.

“The board would like to thank this community for all that they have done to keep this program going.”

Donation checks may be made out to “Meals on Wheels” and mailed to 201 S. Sixth St., Kingfisher, 73750.

Anyone interested in volunteering to deliver meals, whether one time only or on a monthly rotation, can call 405-375-9022.

Other members of the board of directors, all of whom volunteer their time to keep the program running, include Carla Henderson, Melda Fischer, Lou Barrick, Susie Rice and Denise Jech.
