Myers wins hall of fame award
It was a red carpet night for Madisyn “Madi” Myers of Omega at a special event last month.
The Lomega High School senior was selected as the statewide winner of the 12th annual Oklahoma Hall of Fame Scholarship.
The award was presented at a black-tie event in conjunction with the 95th annual Oklahoma Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Oklahoma City.
The $6,000 scholarship, awarded over a four-year period, is based on the student’s leadership roles, civic and community involvement, academic achievement and knowledge of and pride in the State of Oklahoma.
“Ms. Myers is a high-achieving, go-the-distance type of individual who, even as a teenager, has made a positive, lasting difference in her West Oklahoma community,” said Gini Moore Campbell, Oklahoma Hall of Fame vice president.
Myers maintains a 4.0 grade point average, takes college level courses at Redlands Community College, and has been class president three out of four years at LHS where she also runs cross country.
She is active in FFA and the Lomega Food Bank and founded Beef for the Bank, a nonprofit that has donated more than 1,000 pounds of ground beef to local food banks.
In her application Myers wrote: “In the second year of my nonprofi t, the cost of feeding cattle jumped by more than 40 percent. I had no money to pay for the extra costs (so) I hatched a plan to make up the difference.
“I made and sold 150 jars of jam and apple butter. I sold out in a matter of days thanks to the support of my community.”
Myers is planning to attend Oklahoma State University and major in nutritional sciences with a minor in Spanish, followed by a medical degree from the University of Oklahoma.
Her ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician serving families in Blaine County.
“I would love the opportunity to give back to the state that has given so much to me,” Myers said.
She is the daughter of Mike and Julie Myers, who also attended the awards ceremony.
The annual scholarship is funded primarily through the personal donations of Oklahoma Hall of Fame Members.
The purpose of the award is to encourage and inspire the next generations of Oklahoma leaders, organizers said.
