OSU analyst shares ‘twits,’ other advice
Barry Hinson likes to “twit” now.
At least that’s what the current Oklahoma State University mens basketball team analyst thought he was doing when he was actually “tweeting.”
But Hinson has grown a fondness for putting his thoughts onto the social media sphere called Twitter and on Monday recalled a recent post while addressing a crowd of several hundred as the keynote speaker at the Kingfisher Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet.
The tweet read: “Thing’s I’ve learned…I don’t know one successful person who leaves their cart in the middle of the parking lot. Doing the little things matter.”
That was just one of the points of a broader message Hinson delivered to the local business community at the Kingfisher County Fairgrounds Exhibit Building.
A Marlow native, Hinson has served as the head coach at Oral Roberts, Missouri State and Southern Illinois.
He’s also been an assistant under Bill Self at Kansas and - all told - has 38 years of coaching under his belt.
He said “analyst” is a fancy term for “an old guy who’s been there and done that.”
Hinson went on to say he was “like the Yoda” of the OSU coaching staff.
“We’re the guys who ask a lot of questions,” he said of his role. “We ask if you’ve done this or done that.”
He said he had a fondness for Kingfisher - not just because of relationships he has with the likes of John Johnson, Carl Nick, Craig Patterson, Doug Jech and others, but because “I’m from Kingfisher,” he said. “I’m from a town just like this.”
Hinson offered up five steps he recommended, whether attempting to be successful in business or life:
• “Work your butt off”
• Pay attention
• Engage with people daily
• Fall in love with what you do
• Be human.
Hinson went into detail on each point, the last one being that he didn’t like the “tribal” nature of where the country currently sits.
“We are Americans and that’s what matters most,” he said.
Hinson was introduced by Johnson.
