OSU beat writer talks Pokes

A man who “visits with” Mike Gundy multiple times a week during the football season talked about his experiences with Kingfisher Lions Club members.

Scott Wright is entering his sixth season on the Oklahoma State University beat for The Oklahoman. Part of his duties are covering Cowboys football games and talking with the team’s head coach.

“From a media perspective, there’s always something interesting that’s going to come out of his mouth and that makes my job a lot easier,” Wright told Lions Club members last Thursday as the guest speaker.

Wright has been at The Oklahoman since 2005 after stints at newspapers in Bethany and Shawnee.

He spent nine years covering high school sports for the paper.

“I made a lot of trips to Kingfisher and watched some good football,” he said. “I didn’t watch as much basketball, but I did spend a lot of time eating great food in the hospitality room (at the Buckle of the Wheatbelt Invitational).”

Wright discussed some of the challenges - both personally and professionally - of his job, but spent more time accentuating the positives.

That includes last school year when Oklahoma State’s football team went 12-2 and won the Fiesta Bowl.

That included an 11-1 regular-season mark that culminated with a 37-33 win over Oklahoma at Boone Pickens Stadium.

“Bedlam was one of the most exciting games I’ve covered at any level,” Wright said before offering a brief preview of some things to look for in the 2022 season.

He also touched on OSU’s run to the semifinals of the Women’s College World Series in softball this spring and answered a number of questions from the audience ranging from how he got into his profession, protocols for talking with coaches and players, conference realignment, changes in the newspaper industry as a whole and more specifically at his paper, NIL and more.
