Parade, fireworks Saturday evening

By

Kingfisher’s CandyLand Christmas parade and downtown fireworks display begins at 6 p.m. Saturday. Here are tips for a fun, frustration-free experience:

•Plan ahead. Maps of restricted parking areas and the parade route are available on the Kingfisher Christmas Parade and Kingfisher Police Department Facebook pages. Decide in advance where you plan to park.

•Get to town early. Traffic into town will be diverted beginning at 5:45 p.m. at Shafenberg Road, Starlite Drive and Kloeppel Road. Plan to arrive before then and take advantage of downtown shopping and dining, including a food truck court at Block 35 in the 100 block of North Main Street.

•Park and walk. As parade time draws closer, navigating around by vehicle will become more difficult. With everything within walking distance, parking your car for the duration is a simple solution.

•Scope out conveniences. Portable restrooms will be placed along the parade route, including two handicap accessible units on Miles Avenue. Large trash barrels at different locations also will make it easy to toss rubbish before you head home.

•Respect restricted areas. Miles Avenue from Main Street to Sixth Street will be reserved for handicap parking only and will remain barricaded until 5 p.m. Barriers also will be placed Friday evening to block parallel parking spaces on Main Street along the route. Cars parked in restricted areas will be towed at the owner’s expense.

•Stay behind barriers. Parade goers are encouraged to stand in parallel parking spaces as well as on the sidewalks, but are asked to remain behind the barriers for their own safety until law enforcement gives the OK to move into the street for the fireworks display.

•Practice patience. Law enforcement officers from the Kingfisher Police Department, Kingfisher Sheriff’s Office and Oklahoma Highway Patrol, as well as Kingfisher Fire Department personnel will direct traffic as festivities downtown end, but expect delays. Find some Christmas music on the radio and talk with family members about favorite moments of the day as traffic clears.
