Report, search lead to brief DPS lockdown

By
Michael Swisher

The search for a man that resulted in Dover Public School being on lockdown Wednesday ended without incident.

The school went into lockdown mode for about an hour mid-morning.

It was prompted when the Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office was alerted of a man “possibly armed with a firearm who was suicidal” according to Sheriff Dennis Banther.

The man had last been seen at 81 RV Park, which is on the town’s south edge.

An initial search of the RV park, including the trailer in which the suspect lived, came up empty.

Deputies also began a search near the school and worked their way out.

Banther said his office was notified of the vehicle that belonged to the suspect and they returned to the RV park to find it parked in front of a different trailer than his own.

“When they found him in that trailer, he was asleep,” Banther said of the 30-yearold who was not named due to it being a possible medical condition.

Banther said the man talked with deputies on the scene, told them he had broken up with the mother of his children the night before, drank heavily overnight and called a friend Wednesday morning asking him to come remove the guns from his trailer.

“He was trying to be preventative in case some form of depression set in,” Banther said.

The sheriff noted the friend of the suspect did remove the guns and also alerted a family member of his own, who then called authorities.

Banther said the suspect was evaluated by Red Rock Behavioral Services.

“It was determined he did not need to be taken into custody for any mental health issues,” Banther said. “They did provide him with a mental health plan.”

Banther noted the man was very cooperative throughout the process and there was no criminal activity involved throughout the matter.

He also commended Superintendent Jay Wood and the Dover school staff.

“I’m proud of the teamwork they showed to lock the school down and work with us while we were conducting our search,” he said.
