Retiring fire chief presented with surprise honor

There were the traditional awards and new awards Monday at the 85th annual Kingfisher Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

And then there was a surprise honor.

City Manager Jim Thomas took the stage to present Kingfisher Fire Department Chief Tony Stewart with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Stewart will retire at the end of March, ending a four-decade career with the city.

“He has worked with 12 city mayors and eight city managers over his illustrious career with our community,” Thomas said.

“During the past four decades, he has faced countless challenges with an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizens, business community and firefighters.

“As fire chief, he has not only fought fires, but built bridges within our community, forging strong connections that have made Kingfisher a safer and more united place.”

Thomas noted that Stewart chose to remain in Kingfisher for the entirety of his career.

“Tony’s career has been characterized by a spirit of selflessness and sacrifi ce,” Thomas said. “He has committed his entire career in Kingfisher when other opportunities may have provided more money and fame.

“His legacy extends beyond the Kingfisher fire station. It reflects the very fabric of what Kingfisher is all about,” Thomas continued.

“Tony loves his profes-sion, he loves his city and most of all he loves his eternal companion, Kim.

“As we bid farewell to Chief Tony Stewart, let us express our deepest gratitude for his four decades of service, sacrifice and leadership.”
