Separate issues cause damage at Heritage, football concession area

The snap of freezing temperatures that hit the county last weekend didn’t leave before doing some damage at Kingfisher Public Schools.

A pipe burst over the weekend in the concession stand/bathrooms on the south side of the football field.

Before freezing, water damaged large parts of the ceiling above the concession stand area and the men’s restroom.

Superintendent Dr. Daniel Craig told board members the HVAC unit apparently didn’t turn on, which allowed the pipes above the ceiling to freeze.

That came one day after another issue at Heritage School, although it apparently wasn’t weather-related.

A sprinkler head in the school’s library malfunctioned.

The malfunction caused damage to furniture and books and also spread to some other classrooms before it could be shut off.

Shelving and some of the flooring in the library were also damaged.

Craig said tests would be run on the drywall to see the extent of that damage and any molding caused by the issue. If needed, he said, the drywall would be replaced.

A company was brought in to help clean up and assess the damage. Some of that equipment was then taken to the football field concession stand to help clean up that issue once it was discovered.

The two instances were relayed to Kingfisher’s board of education last Monday during its regular January meeting.

The district is working with its insurance carrier to help process the claims, said Craig.

Also at the meeting Craig announced the teachers of the year for the various sites as well as the entire district.

Suzanne Crow, a second grade teacher at Gilmour Elementary, was announced as the district wide teacher of the year as well as the winner for the school.

Other school winners were Stephanie Harper, fourth grade teacher at Heritage; Mark Redwine, seventh grade world history teacher at KMS; and Carina Ponce, Spanish teacher at KHS. (Ed. note: There will be a more comprehensive story on the winners in an upcoming edition.)

The district has been working to close some of the existing activity sub-accounts that have been inactive for an extended period of time.

The board voted Monday to close petty cash accounts for the administration building, KHS, KMS, Gilmour and Heritage as well as accounts for Mama Jackets, the walking complex, National English Honor Society and Speech and Debate Parents League.

The $64.66 that existed in the Mama Jackets account was moved to the football account; the $525.26 in the walking complex account was moved to the track program’s account; the $5.16 in NEHS was moved to the KHS National Honor Society account; and the $99.93 in the speech and debate parents’ account was moved to the speech department’s account.

Also at the meeting, the board voted to approve Mary Lynne Hall to participate in the district’s sick leave sharing program.

After an executive session, the board extended Craig’s contract and approved Makylah Tollefson as the new principal at Gilmour. (Ed. note: A story on those moves appeared in the Wednesday, Jan. 5, edition.)
