Sides state cases in Tuesday hearing

By

A hearing was held Tuesday afternoon to hear oral presentations regarding the writ of mandamus that was filed by a Kingfi sher couple.

The hearing was at 1:30 p.m., which was just before this edition went to press.

It was held at the Okahoma Judicial Center before a referee of the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

Justin and Lyndy Mecklenburg filed an application to assume original jurisdiction and a petition for writ of mandamus with the court in late August.

They are asking the state’s highest court to step in and order the termination of Kingfisher High School head football coach Jeff Myers.

A writ of mandamus is an order from a higher court directed at a lower court, individual or entity requiring a specific action.

In this case, the Mecklenburgs are asking the court to order the local school board to fire Myers and the Oklahoma State Board of Education to appoint an interim superintendent to oversee the termination process.

KPS Superintendent David Glover, the Oklahoma State Department of Education, the OSBE and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters were named in the original application.

Myers was not named as a respondent, but filed a motion to intervene on his own behalf. That motion was later granted by the court.

The Mecklenburgs are the parents of Mason Mecklenburg, who has filed a civil suit against the school district, Myers and three other coaches stemming from his time in the football program from 2017-2020.

That federal case is currently set for trial in December.
