Spare some change at Friday’s game

KHS taking part in OSSAA initiative to help raise funds for cancer center

By

If you see a bucket being passed around at Kingfisher High School’s football game this Friday night, it’s not for your trash.

It’s for your change. KHS is taking part in the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association’s service-learning initiative called “Change for a Change.”

The OSSAA is asking member schools to take part in the initiative in November.

KHS cheerleaders will be passing around 5-gallon buckets at Kingfisher’s game with Anadarko to collect change.

Then, 100 percent of the collected money will go to the Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City.

More specifically, the funds will be directed to the Department of Patient Experience, which serves the patients by providing tangible support in the form of patient resources (i.e., treatment brochures, fact sheets, with easy-to-understand language and terminology, and classes), a volunteer program that provides lunch and snack services, as well as musical and animal therapy.

These funds will be used to broaden the program’s goals of enhancing the patient experience at Stephenson, including for items such as coloring books, word searches, card games and events that will provide support to the center’s patients.

The Department of Patient Experience also hosts many different cancer support groups that are held at Stephenson Cancer Center. With these funds, the department will be able to expand the amenities offered to its support group members by being able to provide refreshments, cookies and a dinner event twice a year.

The Department of Experience also hosts various patient-centered events throughout the year, such as Survivors Day, All Awareness Day and Caregiver Appreciation Week.

The Department of Patient Experience is also wanting to utilize funds to create more family resources.

The center utilizes the Regional Food Bank to be able to provide boxed meals for families experiencing food insecurity as its patient population often has high instances of food insecurity and a percentage that also experiences homelessness.

By participating last year, OSSAA member schools were able to collect more than $20,000 to donate to the center.

Each member school that participates in the initiative will be sent a banner to hang in the school as a recognized supporter of “Change for a Change.”

“We have a lofty goal; it is our hope to send out 484 banners to our member schools,” said Amy Cassell, OSSAA assistant director. “As is always the case in Oklahoma, we come together when people have needs and provide to the best of our ability.

“There is no better lesson we can relay to students than to serve one another.”

For those who are unable to attend the game, there will be a link on the OSSAA website’s home page (ossaa.com) that allows for online giving.
