Sparks handily wins commissioner primary
Republican voters north of the Cimarron River have their candidate for the District 2 commissioner election.
Mike Sparks won Tuesday’s primary vote as he defeated Austin Whittenburg 526-196.
Sparks’ total was 72.85% of the 722 total votes cast.
The primary victory puts his name on the ballot for the Nov. 5 general election. He’ll be opposed by David Roller, the lone Democrat to file for the office.
Voters in just four of the county’s precincts - Hennessey Library, Hennessey Public Schools, Central Baptist Church east of Dover and Dover Town Hall - were eligible in this election.
Sparks has worked for Kingfisher County District 2 for a combined 27 years.
“I appreciate the ongoing support from Kingfisher County residents over the past few months. It’s truly heartwarming to see our community come together,” Sparks told the KT&FP. “As your candidate for District 2 commissioner, I am committed to making your vote count.”
Now, said Sparks, he once again will ask voters to fill the box next to his name in November.
“My role extends beyond roads and construction. It’s a full-time responsibility and I’m prepared to dedicate the necessary time,” he said. “With my experience, transparency and honesty, I welcome the opportunity to serve Kingfi sher County District 2.”
The winner of the general election will be sworn into office in January 2025 for a four-year term.
The seat became open when current District 2 Commissioner Ray Alan Shimanek announced he’d be retiring at the end of his term in December.
