Street closings changed for Hennessey car show due to harvest, other factors
Hennessey Board of Trustees voted to close traffic on Main Street (U.S. Highway 81) for the town’s car show Sunday, June 29.
The highway will be closed from Iowa Street south to 7th Street.
Town Administrator Tiffany Rowen is to work with the state Department of Transportation, and the car show’s committee in case there is a need to leave one lane open on Main Street or if other options are needed, trustees discussed during their meeting last Thursday.
Last year, Main Street was closed from State Highway 51 south to 7th Street for the show, which is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. this year and will also require some setup time.
This year the rains have caused a late harvest and it might not be over by then, said Trustee Bert Gritz. Farmers will need to be able to get to the elevator, he said.
There were also complaints from the hotel, Sonic and other businesses when it was closed up to the highway, said Police Chief Christian Solis from the audience.
They weren’t the only ones who’d complained, the chief said. Travelers who were headed home also had problems.
Detour signage at the highways and on side streets was also “insufficient,” agreed the chief and others.
The board decided more – and larger – signs are needed for that weekend, for other events and could be used in town work zones.
Public Works Director Alyssa Kubat will take care of ordering the items.
Gritz, who is a member of the Car Club, also told the chief he wanted to make sure there would be enough officers and reserves at the car show.
Fireworks are Night of Car Show
The town’s annual fireworks show, staged by town staff, is scheduled for dark the night of the car show instead of the usual July 4 celebration.
Go-carts Sat., June 28
In conjunction with the car show, the Car Club is also hosting go-cart events on Saturday, June 28.
There will be a meet-andgreet with go-cart drivers and Tatum Bohnstedt at the town pool at noon and the races will start at 7 p.m. at the Hennessey Rodeo Arena, 200 S. Arapaho.
