Additional welcome rain fell across much of Kingfisher County Sunday evening.

Amounts ranged from 1.75 inches at the Twila Adams residence east of Kingfisher to .6 inch at the Wheeler Brothers Elevator at Omega.

Kingfisher County Extension Director-Ag Educator Bryan Kennedy, who reported 1.1 inches at his residence northwest of Hennessey, said the rain would encourage more small-grain seeding operations, including his own.

Kennedy said he planned to begin sowing as quickly as the soil was dry enough.

While many of the larger operators had begun dusting in the new crop after the preceding week’s .35 inch shower, he said he couldn’t afford the time to resow fields if the first planting didn’t get up to a stand.

Kennedy said producers with 20,000 acres or so had to start early in order to cover all their acreage. Sunday’s rain was ideal for those who sowed early, especially with forecasts of more moisture on the way in coming days.

“A lot of rye is going in the ground around Hennessey,” Kennedy said.

Wheat is up and growing on a number of Kingfisher area farms as a result of substantial rains a week earlier.

Continued seeding operations were observed locally over the weekend.

Additional area rainfall reports included:

Cashion – 1.5 inches at Cashion Grain and Feed Elevator.

Dover – .7 inch at the Rick and Robin Johnston residence, northwest of Dover.

Hennessey – .7 inch at the CHS Elevator, “but it could have been more because the rain gauge was a little leaky.”

Kingfisher – 1.35 inches at the Mesonet gauge located on the Mueggenborg farm west of Kingfisher; 1.4 inches at the Mike and Donna Reid residence northwest of Kingfisher

Okarche – one inch at both the CHS Elevator in Okarche and Okarche Grain and Feed Elevator, west of Okarche.

Reports from the Tom Arms Facebook “rain blog” included: .7 inch at the Arms residence three miles west of Kingfisher, 1.7 inches at the Cathy Howard residence northwest of Lacey, 2.4 inches at the JoAnn Holthus residence northeast of Dover and 1.5 inches at the Connie Kroener residence 4.5 miles east of Okarche.
