TANKS – A LOT

Many people in Kingfisher - and the rest of the county - noticed the seemingly endless line of armored vehicles headed north on the train tracks on Monday.

“Living by the tracks has its interesting scenes,” said Debbie Burpo, pastor at Frontline Ministries who posted photos of the scene on Facebook. “As far as we can see...north to south. Wonder where they are headed.”

Several others in the county questioned their destination as well.

Kingfisher City Manager Dave Slezickey had some answers as to what exactly they are, where they’re likely headed and where they potentially began their journey.

“They are armored personnel carriers, mechanized infantry,” explained Slezickey, who is also a command sergeant major in the Oklahoma Army National Guard.

Slezickey has nearly three decades with the National Guard. He said the carriers belong to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson in Colorado.

“Most likely they’re headed back from the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Calif., or possibly a warfighter exercise at Fort Bliss or Fort Hood, Texas,” Slezickey said.

He added that rail line haul is the most efficient way of transport for the armored vehicles.

“It’s much more efficient than to truck them,” he said, before quipping, “or driving them.”
