Kingfisher’s city commission is whole once again.

Dawn Terrell and Debbie Burpo took oaths of office to fill empty seats during the regular April meeting of the city commission.

Both Terrell and Burpo ran unopposed during the most recent filing period.

Terrell is filling a three-year unexpired term that was left open when Ryan Deatherage resigned his seat late last year to take over as the director of Kingfisher County 911.

Burpo will have a four-year term.

Her seat was previously held by Vice Mayor Wendell Prim, who was unable to run again due to city charter.

Prim fulfilled eight years on the commission and cannot file to run again for at least another year.

Prim was presented a wooden plaque by Mayor Roxie Alexander at the beginning of Monday’s meeting and prior to the new commissioners being sworn in by City Attorney Jared Harrison.

“I just want to say thank you for all that you’ve done,” Commissioner Geoff Covalt said to Prim. “The work you’ve done and the heart you’ve shown to the city isn’t seen by a lot of people.

“Thank you from me.” Commissioner Kyle Mecklenburg also added some thoughts.

“I certainly appreciate your service to the city,” he said. “The city is better today than it was eight years ago and you’re a part of that.”

The moves were a part of a four-hour meeting that saw commissioners discuss options for funding the design and construction of a new fire department, the upcoming city budget as well as other funding matters within the city [ Ed. note: See stories in the weekend edition of the Times & Free Press.]
