Time to gather the wagons

Spring is here and it’s time for the Chisholm Trail Museum to host a day of cowboy fun at one of the largest chuck wagon gatherings in the state.

Offering a day filled with activities for the whole family, the event will feature 12 working chuck wagons from across the region as well as live music, cooking demonstrations, food samples, gunfights, Wild West show performers, Straka Longhorns and more.

Activities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 23, and continue throughout the day until 2 p.m.

Admission is free, thanks in part to local sponsors. “This is our opportunity to bring some of the tastes and smells of the West to our visitors here in Kingfi sher,” said Jason Harris, executive director at the museum.

“Each year, we continue to expand to include new wagons and activities for all ages.” Chuck wagon teams will set up on the museum grounds to prepare some of their favorite dishes and share samples of their cooking including beans, biscuits, cobbler, bread pudding, stew, beef tips, potatoes, and more.

In addition, Harris said, this year the event will also host three artist demonstrations by Jay Holobach, Debby Kaspari, and Kellie Merrick and music by Cowboy Jim Garling and the Flyin’ Fiddler Wayne Cantwell will be performed throughout the day.

In 2022, the event was awarded the American Chuck Wagon Association’s Best Event of the Year Award.

In order to receive the award, an event must be nominated by participating wagons and demonstrate organizational success, dedicated planning and the opportunity for public enhere gagement, Harris said.

A partial schedule of events include:

•10:30 a.m. - Gunfight

•11:30 a.m. - Medicine Man Show

•Noon - Kyle Dillingham and Peter Markes

•1:15 p.m. - Gunfight The museum is located at 605 Zellers Ave. in Kingfi sher.

“Drop in to see 12 working chuck wagons from across the region as they prepare some of their favorite dishes,” Harris said.

“It will be a day filled with cowboy fun.”
