Kingfisher Community Collaborative is recruiting volunteers to participate in a two-week, smartphone-based research study to identify how, why and in what contexts rural Oklahomans use tobacco or other substances.

Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the study is being conducted by Dr. Julia McQuoid, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center assistant professor.

Qualified study volunteers can earn up to $166 for their participation.

The goal of the study is to gain an understanding of rural cancer risk-related substance use behaviors by combining smartphone data collection with qualitative mapping.

Participants must be 18 or older, use at least one tobacco product at least three times per week and use at least one non-tobacco substance (alcohol, cannabis, opioid or other drug) at least three times per week.

Volunteers who don’t already own a smartphone will be loaned one to use for the 14-day study period.

Prospective volunteers can visit this link: https://redcap.link/Rural-OK-OUHSC to complete a brief screening questionnaire to determine their eligibility.

Once eligible, each volunteer will download an app and complete twice-daily questionnaires that take about five to 10 minutes each.

At the end of the 14-day period, each participant will be interviewed in person or over video chat to discuss his or her experiences.

All data collected during the study can be accessed by study personnel only and will be kept strictly confidential.
