Walker remains president of KPS board
Kingfisher Board of Education members did a bit of reorganizing Wednesday before making their way through an agenda that lasted nearly three hours.
The special meeting was necessary after calling off Monday’s regular meeting due to potential inclement weather.
Once in session, board members voted to keep Charles Walker in the president’s seat. Walker is beginning his second term on the board.
The move was made on Carly Franks’ motion.
Generally board members rotate the positions as they make their way through their five-year terms, meaning Franks was due up to serve as president this year.
“Charles has done a great job and I fully support him remaining as president,” Franks said.
Franks was voted to serve as clerk, which is normally reserved for the board member serving the first year of their term. In the Kingfisher board’s case, that normally would have been Walker.
Voted to serve as vice president was Dana Golbek.
On top of a number of personnel moves (see related story on Page 1), the board also took care of routine business.
Among that was approving temporary appropriations for the 2024-25 school year.
The appropriations application is annually prepared by the district’s auditor Britton, Kuykendall & Miller.
Temporary appropriations are required for any warrants expected to be issued the next fiscal year prior to the board approving the 2024-25 estimate of needs.
Approved were appropriations of just over $21 million in the general fund, $1.08 million in the building fund, $419,410 in the child nutrition fund and $447,441 in the cooperative fund.
The district is now required to file the application for the appropriations with the Kingfisher County Excise Board.
School board members unanimously approved several annual contracts, including:
• The Oklahoma State School Boards Association for employment-related services at a cost of $1,764;
• The Department of Human Services for a number of outreach services via a liaison between DHS and KPS. The school district pays 20 percent of the salary;
• Youth & Family Services for specialized counseling services at a cost of $2,000;
• Ashley Waddell, a speech pathologist, for speech and language therapy services at a cost of $65 per hour;
• The Grounds Guys Landscape Management for districtwide mowing, trimming and bed weeding at a cost of $69,561.65;
• Moore Therapy Services for occupational therapy for $67 per hour during the school year and $70 per hour during summer plus additional costs for mileage, evaluations, re-evaluations and other services.
Also approved were annual duties and appointments for the administration office staff.
That includes:
• Dawn Tollefson - Encumbrance clerk, deputy board minutes clerk and deputy treasurer;
• Pam Werner - Treasurer, activity fund and child nutrition account custodian and board minutes clerk;
• Heather Mercer- Payroll and insurance coordinator and deputy personnel; • Suzanne Bomhoff Human resources/personnel, deputy payroll, deputy activity fund and child nutrition account custodian and deputy encumbrance clerk.
Other actions made by board members was approving an out-of-state trip for the boys basketball team, which will attend a camp June 13-16 at the University of Kansas; and agreeing to continue as the lead fiscal agent for the 2024-25 Title III consortium.
