Weed initiative gets smoked at polls

All 77 counties say ‘no’ to recreational marijuana referendum

By

Kingfisher County joined the rest of Oklahoma in giving a “No” vote Tuesday to State Question 820.

If approved, the question would have allowed legal sale and possession of marijuana to residents 21 years old and older.

Supporters sought to expand the law, which would have effectively decriminalized marijuana use and would have allowed persons to seek expungement of their criminal record for most marijuana-related convictions.

Instead, Oklahoma’s marijuana laws will remain as-is, barring any significant changes considered by lawmakers this year.

All 77 counties voted against the state question. It lost in Oklahoma County by just 36 votes.

The state election office reported a light turnout for the vote with only 25.35% of eligible voters going to the polls.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and Attorney General Gentner Drummond both issued statements praising the outcome of the vote, reiterating their goals of cracking down on the black market and organized crime that sprang out of the state’s medical marijuana industry.

“I believe this is the best thing to keep our kids safe and for our state as a whole,” Stitt said.

“Oklahoma is a law and order state. I remain committed to protecting Oklahomans and my administration will continue to hold bad actors accountable and crack down on illegal marijuana operations in our state.”

Added Drummond: “I’m proud of Oklahomans for rejecting the expansion of organized crime by defeating State Question 820. Regardless of where one stands on the question of marijuana legalization, the stark reality is that organized crime from China and Mexico has infiltrated Oklahoma’s medical marijuana industry.

“I will continue to focus on this serious threat to public safety by targeting the illegal grow operations throughout our state.”

Kingfisher and all neighboring counties gave resounding no votes on the question with Kingfisher County leading the way with a 81.31% voting no and 18.69% voting yes – 2,402 no votes to 552 yes.
