Wheat harvest ‘23 begins

By

The 2023 wheat harvest has begun to trickle in.

Wheeler Brothers Grain reported a “little jag” arrived last weekend and light harvesting resumed on Tuesday.

Zane Varnell at Wheeler Brothers Grain in Kingfi sher said the wheat that has arrived so far has been testing close to 60 pounds per bushel (No.1) but that no fields have been finished to provide an idea on yields.

Greg Stover at Wheeler Brothers Elevator at Omega reported that a couple of producers have begun cutting but that no fields have been completed there.

Weights of 58 pounds were reported.

CHS Elevator at Omega reported no new wheat yet.

The Okarche CHS Elevator reported a start to the harvest with results all over the board.

Cashion Grain and Feed reported no grain arriving as of Friday morning.

Hennessey CHS Elevator reported no loads, yet.

Okarche Grain and Feed reported that no test samples have been received as of Friday morning although there were reports of light harvesting in the Calumet area to the south.

A series of problems complicated the harvest with late emerging grain after substantial May rains following an extended drought and damp fields in some areas after recent heavy rainfall.

Randall Varnell, manager of Wheeler Brothers elevator in Kingfisher, said sunshine and a little southerly wind would kick the harvest into gear but noted the forecast calls for weekend showers.
