The 2021 wheat harvest got under way Thursday in Kingfisher County.

Loads of wheat began arriving at elevators in Kingfisher and Okarche and a spokesman at CHS Elevator at Hennessey said he was expecting wheat to arrive there on Friday.

The early loads are a trickle of what is expected to be a flood of harvesting if sunny, dry weather continues.

Randall Vanell, manager of Wheeler Brothers elevator in Kingfisher, reported a few loads of wheat arrived on Thursday.

“They’re (harvesters) still fighting moisture,” Varnell said.

However, he said the early harvested wheat had good test weights – 61 and 62 pounds per bushel (No. 1).

CHS Elevator at Okarche reported the harvest was “on the move” with a few loads delivered Thursday and more expected Friday as the drying weather continued.

Kingfisher registered high temperatures of 94 on Thursday morning (from Wednesday afternoon) and 95 degrees at 7 a.m. Friday (from Thursday afternoon’s high).

Friday was continuing clear and hot, bringing expectations that more fields would open up for harvest.

Okarche Grain Feed Elevator Manager Gary Altizer reported eight loads arrived there Thursday with excellent numbers in all categories – acceptable moisture, test weights in the 60s and high protein content,

A Cashion Grain and Feed elevator respondent said they were still waiting on fields to dry out a little more.

Kingfisher’s CHS elevator reported receiving “a little bit” of grain Thursday with more expected Friday.
