Wildfires light up over warm, windy weekend

By

Kingfisher County commissioners got in some overtime over the weekend.

All three responded to grass fires in Cimarron River pastures – one northeast of Kingfisher and the other near Lacey in the northwest corner of the county.

The commissioners drove bulldozers to the fires to build fire breaks after getting telephone calls for help in the rugged terrain near the river.

The wildfires began from controlled burns that got out of control.

There were no injuries and no cattle loss as a result of the fires.

The fires were reported at 2 p.m. Saturday and firefighters were on the scene until after midnight.

Fire departments from Hennessey, Ames, Loyal, Omega, Dover, Waukomis, Okeene, Thomas, Clinton and Weatherford responded to the Lacey area fire in District 3.

About 3,800 acres were burned, according to Kingfisher City/ County Emergency Management Director Steve Loftis.

Cashion and Big 4 fire departments worked the fire in District 1, northeast of Kingfisher.

All commissioners – Jeff Moss, District 1; Ray Alan Shimanek, District 2, and Heath Dobrovolny, District 3 – were present for their weekly meeting Monday at the courthouse. Although there were no fires in District 3, Dobrovolny drove a dozer to help put out the fire in Moss’ neighboring district.

Commissioners made quick work of its weekly agenda Monday, approving the following actions:

• A public access drive for Energy Transfer LP located 470 feet from the intersection of NS 2910 and EW 790 roads (approximately one mile east of the Five Corner Intersection at the east edge of Kingfisher);

• Removing Jennifer Boyle, Stacy Maroney and Maggie Jackson as requisitioning officers and adding Dianna Heilman- Gilliam, effective May 1 at the county health department;

• The low bid of $49,000 and $35 per foot for labor only on a District 3 bridge located one-half mile west of the intersection of N 2810 and E 860 Road. (Rick Dietz submitted a $55,000 bid plus $50 per foot for additional welding for piling over 40 feet. Frontier Bridge submitted a no-bid in a phone contact;

• Disposal of radio equipment and a gas grill for the Kingfisher Fire Department that was determined surplus at the preceding week’s meeting.

The county is in the process of installing a new radio system tying in all emergency units.
