Bowers, Sternberger get All-State FB nods

By

A pair of local football players have at least one more football game left in their prep careers - if they so choose.

Kingfisher’s Jett Sternberger and Crescent’s Hunter Bowers last week were named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s All-State football team.

Both were selections for the West team, which will play members of the East in the annual All-State football game July 26 in Tulsa.

Sternberger was selected as a quarterback/athlete and Bowers as a linebacker.

The two were among several local players selected to the OCA’s All-Star by Class teams, which is a prerequisite for earning a spot on the All-State team.

All-Star selections in Class A also included Bowers’ teammate Kaavn Green, selected as a defensive lineman, and Cashion quarterback Griffin Lamb.

In Class 2A, Hennessey’s Dalton Joyce was a defensive line selection.

Linebacker Declan Haub and running back Cole Crosswhite from Kingfisher were tabbed in Class 3A.

Bowers was a four-year starter for the Tigers on defense and finished his career with 263 tackles and 27 sacks.

That included 55 tackles and five sacks as a senior.

Bowers had 66 tackles and nine sacks as a junior, a year in which he guided the Tigers to a 14-1 record and a state runner-up finish in Class A.

He was also a full-time starter that year at quarterback and accounted for 3,302 yards and 56 touchdowns.

He played quarterback, wide receiver and running back during his senior campaign and accounted for 2,190 total yards and 28 touchdowns.

Sternberger had two of the most prolific passing seasons in KHS history.

During his senior year, he threw for 2,411 yards and 33 touchdowns while completing 67 percent of his passes.

Kingfisher finished 9-4 and advanced to the 3A semifinals for the first time since 2014.

He was also Kingfisher’s most consistent rushing threat after the Jackets lost Crosswhite to a broken arm a month into the season.

Sternberger eventually ran for 481 yards and 13 scores.

He did all that despite missing two games with a concussion.

Sternberger threw for 2,398 yards and 35 touchdowns and ran for 399 yards and six scores as a junior.

Bowers has chosen to be a preferred walk-on at Oklahoma State this fall.

Sternberger recently committed to play basketball at Rogers State in Claremore.
