Her first collegiate season is in the books.

And like so many other seasons throughout her career, it was full of successes for Maddi Kamas.

Oklahoma City University finished as national runner-up last week in the NAIA women’s golf championships at Lincoln Park Golf Course.

A freshman on the team, Kamas finished tied for third individually and led the entire field in birdies throughout the three rounds.

“I felt like I played super consistent throughout nationals and the season as a whole,” said Kamas, who earlier this season won the individual title at the Sooner Athletic Conference championships.

Kamas fired rounds of 69- 69-70 on the par-72 course in Oklahoma City that played 6,013 yards.

She was four strokes behind winner MinJi Kang of Truett McConnell (Ga.), who set a 54-hole record for the NAIA championships with her rounds of 69-66- 69.

Reagan Chaney, Kamas’ fellow freshman at OCU, was second with a 207. Nicole Jung of Taylor (Ind.) tied Kamas’ 208. The top seven golfers in

The top seven golfers in this year’s field were better than the previous 54-hole mark of 214.

Kamas had six birdies in her final round and 17 for the tournament.

The final-round birdies helped offset an early double-bogey.

“I definitely left some shots out there, but that’s every round,” she said.

OCU’s 865 finished behind British Columbia by five strokes in the team title race.

The Stars’ 5-under-par 283 in Friday’s final round set an NAIA Championships 18-hole record. They opened with rounds of 290 and 292 and were 10 strokes back of British Columbia entering the final round.

Kamas won the Class 4A individual state championship as a senior at Kingfisher High School in 2021. She was a state runner-up two years before.

After winning the SAC title in late April, she was not only named the conference’s player of the week, but garnered NAIA women’s golfer of the week for the second time this season.

She won three individual titles and averaged 72.7 over 30 rounds of competitive golf.

All that came after microfracture surgery in her right knee last November.

“After having the surgery, it was tough to bounce back,” Kamas said.

Recovery can take up to a year, but Kamas defeated the odds.

She was released to play in January, but it was just one month before the team’s spring season debut at the Las Vegas Shootout.

“It was hard to get my confidence back,” she said. “I was really nervous in Vegas.”

Kamas shot rounds of 80 and 79 to finish tied for 16th as OCU won the team championship.

“That gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season,” Kamas said.

After that tournament, Kamas tied for fourth at the Southern Nazarene Invitational, tied for fifth at the South Dakota State Jackrabbit Invitational, won the Kyle Blaser Invitational and was fourth in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic before winning conference.

As was the case in high school, Kamas isn’t just a standout on the golf course.

She was selected for the Meinders Business Leadership Fellows Program.

The select group of students in the program not only receive a full tuition scholarship to the Meinders School of Business, but also participate in a program of co-curricular learning and personal development opportunities.

“We are partners with the Thunder so we do a lot of events with them and we also go out and do a lot of hands-on activities with other businesses,” Kamas said.
