Longhorns reach finals at Okeene

Despite being the seventh seed, the Dover boys nearly brought home a tournament title.

Ringwood outlasted Dover 36-33 Saturday night to win the Okeene Invitational championship.

Dover was gunning for its first tournament championship since 2014 and had already pulled off two upsets to reach the finals.

In Thursday’s first round, the Longhorns shocked second-seeded Waukomis 56-45.

They used an 18-5 run in the first quarter to gain a lead they never lost.

Kolten Shaw and Damion Turner combined for 11 points in that first quarter and then 12 in the fourth as they held off the Chiefs.

Shaw scored 22 and Turner 14.

Canton knocked off third-seeded Okeene in its opener, but the Tigers couldn’t topple Dover in the semifinals.

The Longhorns outscored the Tigers in each of the first three quarters en route to a 52-43 win.

Turner scored 22 while Emory Norton added 12.

Ringwood was the No. 1 seed in the tournament and led Dover 21-17 at halftime.

The Longhorns held Ringwood to two points in the third, but only managed five in cutting their deficit to a point.

The Red Devils led by three in the waning seconds when Norton’s would-be game-tying 3-pointer fell short.

The finish didn’t diminish the team’s run, said coach Aaron Norton.

“Overall, we played really well in the tournament,” he said. “Everyone that got on the floor contributed for us.”

Norton added the Longhorns “missed enough free throws to win it.”

Dover was just 2 of 10 from the foul line.

That included 1 of 3 in the fourth quarter.

Shaw led the team with nine points. Carlos Flores scored eight and Lance Dunigan six.

Shaw was joined on the all-tournament team by Norton and Turner.

Dover (6-10) has won four of its last six games.

Short-handed Lady Longhorns still finish 3rd

Dover overcame being shorthanded for much of the tournament to still take third place in the girls bracket.

The Lady Longhorns erased a halftime deficit to beat Canton 30-27 Saturday in the third place game.

After taking an early lead, Dover was held to just one second-quarter point and trailed 18-13 at halftime.

It flipped the script in the third and limited Canton to just two points and tied the game.

In the fourth, four different Lady Longhorns scored as Dover outscored the Lady Tigers 10-7.

Karlee Harviston scored four points in the quarter and led the team with eight overall.

She was named to the all-tournament team along with Katelyn Harviston, who scored six points.

Yareli Obeso also scored six for the Lady Longhorns.

Kamree and Karlee McNulty returned to action on Saturday after missing the previous three games due to illness.

Karlee McNulty scored four points.

The Lady Longhorns were defeated 62-35 by Okeene in Friday’s semifinals. Okeene went on to win the tournament.

Dover is now 11-5 on the season.
