Perry escapes Jackets, 39-32

Gant Browning was named homecoming king on Tuesday, then went on the mat to back it up.

The Kingfisher High School senior won his 132-pound match by technical foul, though it still wasn’t quite enough to lead the Jackets to an upset of Perry.

The Maroons won pivotal matches at 190 and 215 pounds to gain enough cushion for a 39-32 victory over Kingfisher at Heritage Gymnasium.

Browning was named homecoming royalty in a coronation prior to the dual.

Fellow senior Zoey Padilla was named the homecoming queen.

Girls didn’t wrestle on Tuesday, so Padilla and the rest of the homecoming court sat nearby as Kingfi sher fell behind 12-0 in losing by falls at 113 and 120 pounds (there was no 106-pound match).

Jaxon Sheppard got the Jackets going in the right direction, needing just 29 seconds to pin Tucker Vollmer at 126 pounds.

Browning’s 18-3 domination over Hayden Balderson was good for five points and pulled the Jackets within 12-11.

Brayden Kochenower kept the momentum on Kingfisher’s side.

The sophomore pinned Tony Brooks in just 1:27 of their 138-pound bout to push the Jackets to a 17-12 advantage.

That set up the night’s most exciting match as KHS senior Damien Haynes took on the Maroons’ Asher Robinson at 144. Robinson had the offense for most of the first period as he scored a pair of takedowns.

Haynes got escapes on both of them, then tied the match at 4-4 with a late takedown in the final few seconds of the period.

The Jacket then managed an escape and a takedown to take a 7-4 lead into the final period.

Once there, Robinson battled back with an escape and takedown of his own.

But the final flurry of the last 90 seconds saw Haynes energize the crowd with yet another escape and takedown before holding off Robinson for a 10-8 victory.

That gave the Jackets a 20-12 lead, but the momentum didn’t stay with the home squad.

Perry’s Chris Cordova picked up a technical fall over Jace Johnson at 150 and the Maroons earned falls at 157 and 165 pounds to claim a 29-20 lead.

Mason Alig stopped the Maroon surge as he pinned Andrew Kukuk in 1:49 to get the Jackets within striking distance.

They trailed by three points with three matches to go.

Cash Warren got a pin over Jose Santoyo at 190 pounds to make it 35-29, meaning the Jackets needed a victory at 215 to have a shot at the dual.

Logan Cook didn’t allow it as he shut down Landon Schroeder’s offense to score a 9-0 victory and give the Maroons a 13-point lead heading into the heavyweight match. With the dual win out of reach, Ryker Long still ended it on a positive note for the home team as he pinned Marcus McPherson in 2:46.
