Cashion back in semis after outscoring Oktaha
It wasn’t exactly a pitcher’s duel, but it was a win.
And it’s got Cashion in familiar territory.
The third-ranked Wildcats downed No. 6 Oktaha 13-9 Thursday in the Class 2A-I baseball state quarterfinals at Shawnee.
It was the rubber match of sorts for the two teams as they decided the last two state championships with each winning one.
Defending champ Cashion’s win advances it to the semifinals for the fifth consecutive year.
The Wildcats played No. 2 Latta in Friday’s semifinal.
It was an early strike for Cashion as five hits resulted in five runs in the top of the first inning.
That included an RBI single by Rival Fields and Garet McKeever and a two-run double off the bat of Aidan Berry.
The Tigers crawled back into it as they scored two runs in the second and two more in the third.
Brian Nabavi and Kyle Yowell built some breathing room in the fourth as the former slapped a tworun double and the latter an RBI single.
The fifth provided another big punch for the Wildcats with four more runs.
That included a bases loaded walk for Yowell and a wild sequence that saw both Ryder West and Jayden Bolton steal home.
Berry added a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning to push Cashion’s lead to 13-6.
The Tigers plated three runs in the sixth, but never could close the gap.
Coach Blake Mounce used five different pitchers in the win.
Starter Brody Nichols picked up the win with 3 1/3 innings of work.
Yowell pitched an inning, Ryder Lykins threw 1 1/3 innings, Easton Snell hurled an inning and Landon Phillips recorded the final out.
Combined they allowed nine hits, six earned runs, struck out 12 and walked eight.
At the plate, Berry was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Fields also collected three hits and scored a run.
Nabavi, Yowell and McKeever had two hits apiece.
