In the playoff hunt
After back-to-back games last week, both Kingfisher High School soccer teams find themselves squarely in contention for a playoff spot.
The Lady Jackets defeated a pair of overmatched foes via the mercy rule as they downed Alva at home on Wednesday and Crooked Oak on the road Thursday.
Both were by a score of 10-0.
Maya Haney dropped in four goals in the matchup with Alva, which served as both homecoming and senior night for KHS. The game was originally scheduled Tuesday, but the threat of severe weather prompted its postponement.
The team’s lone senior, Harper Evans, joined Haney in garnering a hat trick.
Evans was crowned homecoming queen later in the evening (see related photo on Page 9).
Magaly Charqueño Martinez and Jennings Broddle both scored a goal while Yesenia Rivera, who started in goal, was able to score two.
Her second goal ended the matchup early in the second half.
Thursday was much of the same.
Haney and Evans both recorded hat tricks for the Lady Jackets.
Charqueño Martinez, Broddle, Rivera and Ryann Shue also found the net for the 10-0 win.
The victories moved KHS to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the District 3A-2, which is good for third place.
Like the KHS boys, the Lady Jackets play at Astec Charter on Tuesday.
The KHS girls finish up their regular season at Millwood on Friday while the boys play at Dove Science.
Neither Astec nor Millwood girls have a win this season.
Kingfisher’s boys sit at 4-2 in their district and are 7-6 overall.
They downed Alva 9-1 Wednesday and were defeated 10-1 at Crooked Oak.
The Ruf-Nex are 9-1 on the season and 5-0 in the district.
The Jackets are currently tied for third in the district with Crossings Christian, but have the tie-breaker advantage with the head-tohead win.
R.J. McCarty scored the team’s lone goal against Crooked Oak.
During the homecoming win, Eduardo De La Torre managed four goals.
Abel Guzman and Mason Snyder notched two goals each and senior Rhett Schlegel scored one.
