Showcasing their academic talents, Kingfisher High School students recently brought home another sweepstakes award, along with many top-10 placings, from the annual Southwestern Interscholastic Meet.

Participating in the Class II division, 39 KHS students competed in various contest categories, with every student placing in the top-10 or better in their respective categories, KHS Counselor Paula Leffingwell said.

With 58 schools competing in three classes, over 1,800 tests were administered in the competition held at Weatherford’s Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Classes are divided based on the student enrollment for grades 9-12.

Class I is comprised of schools with 600 or more students or homeschool students; Class II is for schools with 151 to 599 students; and Class III includes schools with 150 or fewer students.

Students have the opportunity to test their knowledge against their peers in academic categories including fine arts, biological sciences, business, computer science, language and literature, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences and technology.

KHS and Okarche High School students competed in the Class II division and Lomega High School was in the Class III division.

Plaques are awarded for each class division winner in the nine subject areas. KHS took home the top spot for Business, Computer Science and Technology and OHS won the Mathematics division.

“The results that our staff and students saw at SWIM are a reflection of the academic preparation the students receive,” said Andy Evans, Kingfisher Public Schools Superintendent.

“I was very happy for Mrs. (Sabrina) Nault, Mr. (Kurt) Kaya, Mrs. (Carina) Ponce, the entire Social Studies Department, the Language Arts Department, Mrs. (Jan) Swart and Mrs. (Morgan) Dutton to have multiple placers.

“Our performance in the sciences show strong work by both Mrs. Swart and Mrs. Dutton and the technology results give even more credence to our continuing growth in STEM and Technology Applications.

“Our results go right along with the other indicators we have had this year from our academic state championships in cross country, softball and girls basketball. Our staff and students did well.”
