2 DKG essay winners place in state contest
Theta Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International received word that two of its chapter essay winners have placed second in the Oklahoma Organization of DKG.
The seventh grader placing second was Katie Myers of Lomega. Her teacher is Whitney Hauser.
The eighth grader taking second place was Afton Shirey of Okarche.
Lyndal Westmoreland is her teacher.
The theme was “In the Spirit of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics: Transforming the World.”
Cozette Wymer, Fairview, is the chair and Theta members serving on that committee were Dana Terrell, Kingfisher, and Ann Ritchie, Enid.
Due to COVID-19 the OSO State Convention in June has been canceled and another date may be selected to honor these winners.
If another date is selected they will be invited to read their essays.
Due to the local chapter not being able to host a reception, the six students received a monetary donation and a certificate.
The April Theta project was to bring items for the Kingfisher and Blaine county sheriff’s departments as it has members in both counties.
Due to the group not being able to hold its business meeting, the members voted to give a donation to each of the departments for use in the need of those incarcerated, especially women.
This project was a part of its November meeting in which Harri Williams discussed “Interrupting the School to Prison Pipeline and Mass Incarceration” and as a part of the Annie Award, a program to recognize an outstanding program in the areas of community service or educational issues.
Members will present the checks to the departments once restrictions are loosened.
Installations of new officers will take place in the fall.
The officers will assume their positions on July 1.
