53rd Scholarship Program Saturday
Four county high school students vying for Distinguished Young Woman
Four Kingfisher County high school juniors will compete for college scholarships at the 53rd annual Kingfi sher County Distinguished Young Women program at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Kingfisher Heritage Auditorium.
Participants in this year’s program include Kara Murray, Kari Shepard and Cora Taylor, all of Kingfi sher, and Jayden Wells of Cashion.
This year’s program has a “Footloose” theme and the young women will be judged on academic achievement, as well as talent, interview, fitness and poise.
Each participant also will submit and be judged on a Be Your Best Self project proposal to present to younger girls.
Participants also will vote for one member of their group to win the spirit award, which also carries a scholarship prize.
The participant with the most points at the end of the competition will be named Kingfi sher County’s Distinguished Young Woman for 2021 and be eligible to compete for the state title next summer.
Kara Murray, the daughter of Billy and Sandy Murray, is a member of FFA and a participant in the national award winning conduct of chapter meetings team as well as the floriculture team and has competed in swine shows, prepared public speaking and the excellence in leadership program.
She is a member of the Center of Family Love Teen Board and Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where she participates in youth group and teaches Sunday school.
Murray plans to attend Oklahoma State University to become a director of religious education.
She will perform a dance routine for her talent.
Kari Shepard, the daughter of Jamie and Sharon Shepard, is a KHS cheerleader and a member of the golf team.
She attends Lifeway Church, where she participates in youth group, and dances at Curtain Time Dance Studio.
She plans to attend either Oklahoma Baptist University or the University of Central Oklahoma and pursue a career in nursing.
Shepard will play a piano selection for her talent.
Cora Taylor, the daughter of Kevin and Elizabeth Taylor, participates in cheerleading, public speaking, acting, singing and swimming.
After high school, she plans to attend the University of Oklahoma as the fi rst step toward a career in pediatric surgery.
Taylor will perform a vocal number for her talent.
Jayden Wells, the daughter of Kenneth and Tammie Wells and Shauna and Josh Scheihing, participates in basketball, softball, archery and skeet shooting.
She plans to attend OU and pursue a career as a physician assistant.
Wells will perform a recitation as her talent selection Saturday.
The program is open to the public and tickets are available at the door.
