Big third quarter boosts Hennessey boys to victory

By

A dominant third quarter propelled Hennessey to its second straight win to open the season.

The Eagles broke open a tight game with a 254 run en route to beating Newkirk 51-31 last Friday on the road.

Hennessey, which moved to No. 7 in this week’s Class 2A rankings, held a modest 24-19 lead at halftime.

But that advantage ballooned as the Eagles buried five 3-pointers after the break.

Juan Dominguez made two of them and Wade Vinson two more.

Vinson scored all eight of his points in the quarter.

Dominguez also made two treys and scored eight points in the first quarter as Hennessey got out to a 13-10 lead.

He led the team with 16 points.

Freshman Jael Torres scored 11.

Noah Moery, who had the other 3-pointer in the third quarter, scored seven points.

Offensive struggles costly for Lady Eagles

Hennessey’s defense was stellar once again.

The offense, however, couldn’t keep up.

The Lady Eagles dropped to 1-1 on the season last Friday in a 31-27 loss at Newkirk.

Hennessey managed five field goals in the first quarter and led its hosts 13-10.

However, the Lady Eagles managed just five more field goals combined over the final three frames.

Kass Amburn led Hennessey with 15 points, but was the lone Lady Eagle in double digits.

Gracie Mills scored six, all in the first quarter.
