Board hires new coach, accepts Burns’ resignation

By

It was the end of a couple of eras and the beginning of a new one at Monday’s meeting of the Kingfisher Board of Education.

In one of his final moves on the board, outgoing President Mark Squires was part of a unanimous vote to accept the resignation of Lori Burns as FFA co-adviser (see related story on Page 1).

“All good things must come to an end and with that, I recommend you accept the resignation of Lori Burns,” said Jason Stern-berger, superintendent.

Burns, along with her husband Ryan, has spearheaded a program that’s in the midst of an unprecedented streak of State FFA Sweepstakes wins as well as countless state, regional and national title winners.

Then, after about a 30-minute executive session, the board also voted unanimously to hire Gerrett Spears as the new girls basketball coach (see related story on Page 6).

After that vote, Stern-berger presented Squires with a plaque of appreciation for his years on the board.

Monday was Squires’ final meeting. When the board next meets, it will include the winner of Tuesday’s election between Servrina Prim and Charles Walker (polls closed after press time for this edition).

“Mark was great to work with. He was very diligent in his decision making, which was always in the best interest of Kingfisher Public Schools,” Sternberger said.

“He can look back and say he served the school and community with great integrity and fairness.”

That capped about an hour-long meeting of the board, which worked through a relatively short agenda.

In other actions Monday, the board:

•  Approved out-of-state trips for FFA to Fort Scott, Kan., on April 5; Lubbock, Texas, on April 6; and Hutchinson, Kan., on April 17;

•  Approved an agreement with Municipal Accounting Systems for accounting software;

•  Approved a school climate survey draft, and,

•  Hired Casey Nichols for the maintenance crew.

The board also discussed results of a recent committee meeting for long-range facility planning.

Sternberger also reminded members of the special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, April 8.

Members will approve bids for the new cheer/ softball facility. Those bids were to be opened at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
